Student Financial Responsibilities |
When you register for a course, you are accepting responsibility for all the related financial obligations with Sacred Heart regardless of how the fees are being funded. It is also your responsibility to be aware of all financial as well as academic deadlines and to ensure you are officially registered in your courses. Your payments will be applied to any balance owing from prior sessions before being applied to current session fees. If you register for a course and end up not attending classes, you are still responsible for all the fees unless courses are dropped within the refund period and the criteria are met for financial credit to be issued. |
Payment Methods |
Payments may be made on-line. Cheques, money orders and bank drafts made payable to Sacred Heart of Peterborough may be mailed to the Main Office. |
Advance Payments |
A non-refundable acceptance deposit of $100 for full-time students and $50 for part-time students is due by July 31, 2017. Deposits are credited towards assessed tuition fees. |
Paying Your Fees |
If you are registered for the 2017-2018 academic year you have the option of paying your fees in full or in two instalments. Payment in full or first instalment of fees for Fall and Winter courses is due on or before September 1, 2017 with the second instalment due no later than January 15, 2018. If you start studies at Sacred Heart in January 2018 (meaning you do not attend Sacred Heart between September and December 2017), you will be required to pay your fees in full by January 1, 2018. |
Late Payments of Fees |
Fees, fines, or other indebtedness to Sacred Heart (including tuition and student fees, parking fines, library fines, housing and conferences fees) must be paid in full by the Payment Due Dates. Otherwise, you may be placed on Financial Hold and charged an Interest Penalty. If the overdue amount is not paid in full by the first day of the next session, no future session registration will be allowed. Students will remain liable for the outstanding balance, plus all interest assessed up to the date on which the outstanding balance is paid in full. |
Financial Hold |
Financial hold results from outstanding indebtedness to Sacred Heart, including tuition and student fees, parking and library fines, and Student Housing fees. Please note the following:
The financial hold will be removed when the outstanding balance, including all penalties, is paid in full. |
Interest Penalty |
Interest will be charged at a rate of prime plus 6% per annum. Interest is charged on all outstanding amounts that are past due and is calculated toward the end of each month. Anything else in this section notwithstanding, any amounts charged as penalties for the late payment of fees and accounts (including the Interest Penalty and the processing fee) will not exceed 60% per annum. |
Dishonoured Payments |
There is a $40 fee for any payment which is returned/dishonoured. Sacred Heart reserves the right to restrict students to a payment method to reduce the risk of returned payments. |
Outstanding Library Fines |
Library fines are inconvenient for everyone involved, especially for another researcher looking for a resource that you have signed out and have not returned as agreed. See the Librarian or the Dean and get any fines levied against you cleared up as soon as possible. |
Registered Education Savings Plans (RESP) |
If you pay fees from RESPs you are subject to the same payment deadlines. Contact the Office of the Registrar in advance of the payment due dates to request the completion of the RESP forms provided by you financial institution. These forms may take up to 10 days to be processed. |
Tax Certificates: T2202A |
A tax certificate for fees assessed during the calendar year and eligible for the education deduction (T2202A) will be provided in February. Fees which are eligible to be included on the T2202A can be found on the CRA website. |
Full-Time Students and Supplementary Fees |
Full-time students carry a course load of 3.5 or more credits and are required to pay full-time tuition fees. You may be asked to pay supplementary fees to support participating in field trips and/or special course materials. You will be advised of these fees by their instructor. |
Part-Time Fees: $400 per course in 2017-18 |
Part-time students carry a course load of 3.0 or fewer credits and pay tuition fees on a per-course basis which in 2017-18 is $400.00 CDN for a 0.5 credit course. If students increase their course load for the academic year to more than 3.0 credits after September 26, part-time fees will be reversed and full-time tuition fees will become payable. You may be asked to pay supplementary fees to support participating in field trips and/or special course materials. You will be advised of these fees by their instructor. |
Senior Citizens and Tuition Fees |
Ontario residents who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 65 years or over during the session in which they are registered will be assessed the usual deposits, application, tuition, or student fees for degree credit courses. The same policy applies for senior citizens registering in all non-credit courses and certificate programs offered by Sacred Heart through Adult and Continuing Education. |
TUITION REFUND POLICY
The following procedures and guidelines correspond in detail to the Postsecondary Education Choice and Excellence Act (2000) O. Reg. 279/02: GENERAL, Sections 8 & 9.
Procedures and Guidelines
1. Sacred Heart shall refund promptly all tuition fees for the BA (Hons) in Catholic Studies Program for the period for which a student has registered,
(a) if he or she gives written notice to the institution within two days after signing a registration agreement that he or she rescinds the agreement; or
(b) if the program is discontinued before the first day.
2. Sacred Heart shall refund promptly all tuition fees for the BA in Catholic Studies Program for the period for which a student has registered, less an administrative fee of a maximum of $500,
(a) if he or she gives the institution written notice that he or she does not intend to begin the program; or
(b) if he or she does not attend the first ten consecutive days of the program.
3. Sacred Heart shall refund promptly unearned tuition fees for the Catholic Studies Program for the period for which a student has registered, less an administrative fee of a maximum of $500,
(a) if he or she withdraws from the program before one-half of it has been completed; or
(b) if the program is discontinued or suspended for any reason.
4. A refund is payable as follows:
a. Sacred Heart shall arrange for the trustee to pay to the student the amount to which the student is entitled under these Guidelines from the amount, if any, of the unearned tuition fees held in the fund for benefit of the student.
b. Sacred Heart shall pay to the student the balance of the amount to which he or she is entitled under these guidelines.
5. Despite section (4) above, a refund required by these guidelines may be paid in total to the student by Sacred Heart and, if it does so, Sacred Heart is entitled to be paid the amount held in the trust fund for the benefit of the student in respect of unearned tuition fees.
6. Despite section (4) above, if the amount of unearned tuition fees held by Sacred Heart in respect of a student who is entitled to a refund is insufficient to cover the administrative fee authorized under sections (2) or (3) above, the deficiency may be deducted from the unearned tuition fees held in trust for the benefit of the student and paid to Sacred Heart.
Unearned tuition fees - Definition
Per the legislation referenced in the Preamble of this Policy, an unearned tuition fee is any prepaid tuition fee collected from a currently enrolled student for the study period in which the student is registered but not yet earned by Sacred Heart of Peterborough because the program has not yet been delivered.
