Transfer Credit Arrangements
Transfer credit refers to courses that you completed from a program of study at a different accredited post-secondary institution and that you can use towards a degree at Sacred Heart. Acceptance of transfer credits from accredited institutions are based on the recognition
that while learning experiences may differ in a variety of ways their substance may be essentially equivalent in terms of their content and rigour. Sacred Heart College may recognize the academic work you have already completed by granting Advanced Standing or Transfer Credit, provided your previous studies are equivalent in terms of content and rigour. Advanced Standing and Transfer credit may also be granted for some standardized advanced high school programs.
Transfer Credit Requirements
You should have a grade of 60% or higher in the courses you wish to transfer to Sacred Heart. A grade of "P" (pass) is assigned to all transfer credits. The original institution where the credit was obtained must be accredited with the Province of Ontario.
Transfer credit is assigned in three different ways
- Assigned credit is used when there is a Sacred Heart equivalent.
- Unassigned credit in a subject area is used for courses without Sacred Heart equivalents, but which are acceptable to a program as fulfilling subject requirements toward a degree program. Individual programs may restrict the number of unassigned credits that may be counted toward a degree in that department.
- General elective credit is used for courses which are judged to be transferable but do not fulfill specific program requirements. General elective credits are expressed in terms of Scientia Humana elective courses.
Changes to Transfer Credits
We determine transfer credits by using the guidelines and regulations effective at the time the admission decision is made. Subsequent changes to guidelines and regulations do not affect a previously determined transfer credit assessment. Normally, once transfer credits have been awarded and applied to your Sacred Heart academic record, they cannot be removed from that record.
If you want a reassessment of your transfer credits you must request it in writing from the Registrar's Office before the end of the first academic year of study in which you are admitted. You can normally expect a response within 10 working day.
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
Sacred Heart College does not grant PLAR credits and credits granted by another institution on the basis of PLAR are not transferable. Sacred Heart reserves the right to assign or not to assign transfer credit in any situation.
Transfer Credit Eligibility, by Jurisdiction
You can transfer credits from various accredited institutions.
Canadian Universities |
All the university-level credit courses that you completed at an accredited Canadian university, which are academic in content, and in which you received a minimum grade of 60%, will be considered for transfer credit recognition at Sacred Heart College. |

We will refer to whatever articulation agreements and Memoranda of Understanding are in place at the time of your application to Sacred Heart. The terms of an articulation agreement may take precedence over general transfer credit guidelines.
Outside of an articulation agreement, individual courses and programs which are academic in nature will be considered for transfer credit. A minimum 60% average is required in any community college course to be considered for course-by-course transfer credit assessment. |

Private or Career Colleges |
Although many private/career colleges are registered with the Ministry of Education, most offer specific applied (non-academic) career training. Sacred Heart College does not grant transfer credit for programs completed at private/career colleges. |
Advanced Standing
Advanced standing is placement to a certain level in a program granted to students on admission. Sacred Heart examines your previous work or asks you to take a placement test, and then places you at a certain level in the sequence of courses in the program.
Limitations on Transfer Credits and Advanced Standing
The total number of non-Sacred Heart credits may not exceed 10.0 for an Honours degree. Specific degree requirements may mean that not all your transfer credits will be applied to a Sacred Heart degree program. Keep in mind that if you transfer to a different degree program, the transfer credits assigned on admission may not all apply to the new degree program. It is your responsibility to discuss your academic program requirements with an academic advisor and to notify the Registrar's Office of any program changes.
